Standards via current browsers

Okay, as a long time Microsoft enthusiast, I was quite pleased with the new IE 8.0 and their stance on “standards compliance.  I was so excited I wrote a site on using Windows 7 64 bit with compliance for SharePoint 2010 using XHTML 1.0 strict, WCAG 2.0 and CSS 2.1.  When I finished the facing page I opened it in Internet Explorer 8.0 and it all worked!!!  Except…

the border edges on my links.

I had set them to Groove which should give them a button like offset.  They showed a black border.  I was a bit miffed.  But not to be daunted I opened them up in Mozilla Firefox where they also failed to render.  Okay, pissed…

I opened them up in every browser I have installed with the following results.

Browser Result
IE 8.0 64 bit failed to render groove
Mozilla 3.5.7 failed to render groove properly – appeared embossed
Google Chrome 5.0.375.99 Rendered properly
Safari 5.0 (7533.16) Rendered Properly
Opera 10.60 Build 3445 Rendered Properly

Why do the two most popular browsers not render the standards properly?  Shouldn’t the big boys be able to get it right?
